Former Olympic gymnast Simone Biles is among the 90 people who believe the FBI owes them $1 billion in restitution for its failure to adequately investigate the widespread allegations of sexual assault against sports doctor Larry Nassar.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
ABC News reported that the law firms representing Biles and the other plaintiffs, including Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Maggie Nichols, have filed a series of tort lawsuits against the federal government, alleging damages totaling more than $1 billion.
For example, a July 2021 Inspector General report concluded the FBI had committed “many and fundamental errors,” violated “several FBI standards,” and “failed to respond to the Nassar claims with the highest seriousness and urgency that they deserved and required.”
According to a new investigation, FBI agents were made aware of Nassar’s abuse claims in 2015, but “did not take any action to lessen the risk to gymnasts that Nassar continued to treat.”
A separate investigation by Michigan State University resulted in the removal of Nassar from his posts in September 2016 after he was found guilty of sexually abusing at least 70 other gymnasts, according to the IG.
In April, thirteen gymnasts filed a $130 million lawsuit against the FBI.
Nichols said in a statement that “for 421 days [the FBI] collaborated with USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee (USOPC) to keep this knowledge from the public and allowed [Nassar] to continue assaulting young women.” “It’s about time the FBI was held to account.”
Director Christopher Wray has previously expressed sorrow for the FBI’s handling of the claims, which occurred prior to his arrival as director. The FBI has not yet responded to a request for comment. When asked about the FBI’s handling of the case, Wray stated, “I’m extremely sorry that there were folks at the FBI who had their own chance to stop this monster back in 2015 and failed.”
IMPORTANT FACTORS
More than 330 female gymnasts have accused Nassar of sexual abuse, and he is currently serving a sentence of more than 300 years in jail for his crimes. Several well-known gymnasts, including Simone Biles, Misty May-Treanor, Misty Maroney, Nicole Nichols, and Aly Raisman, have come out about the abuse they suffered at the hands of the sports doctor. They have also attempted to hold those responsible for the abuse accountable. In addition to the $500 million settlement from Michigan State University and $380 million from USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the gymnasts have filed a claim with the FBI for damages.
ISTHATPORKS TAKE:
Like Harvey Weinstein, Larry Nassar is every girl’s worst nightmare that we don’t always get right when they enter our orbit. Thankfully, looks like the girls are going to land somewhere south of 1 billion to fill those voids. Hey, if they get the 1 billion, more power to them. But, stories like this show that we are all responsible no matter who we are on the food chain. Our moments just might save someone from being attacked by an individual disguised as a nice guy. That’s sometimes hard to detect but essential for our survival. Hopefully, pork won’t be harder to see anymore with cases such as these when they come up again.
What’s Your Take on this obvious pork but maybe food years up?
