Texas school removes 41 books, including the Bible from its library shelves

The U.P.I. on August 16 reported: The Bible, Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye,” and a graphic novel adaption of Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl” are just some of the works that have been removed from Keller Independent School District libraries in preparation for the first day of school.

“Attached is a list of all books that were challenged last year. By the end of today, I need all books pulled from the library and classrooms. Please collect these books and store them in a location. (book room, office, etc.),” Jennifer Price, executive director of Keller ISD’s curriculum and instruction, wrote in an email sent to principals, obtained by The Texas Tribune.

The email came with a list of 41 books that were to be removed, including several Bible translations and a memoir about a transgender woman’s search for her own identity, “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe.

Some neighbors were taken aback by the directive to remove all 41 volumes because a public school district committee had met the previous year and advocated for keeping copies of novels like “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison and “Anne Frank’s Diary” in classroom libraries.

Nonetheless, three new conservative school board members, all recipients of money from a Christian political action organization, have been elected to the district’s seven-member board of trustees since that committee met and recommended maintaining some challenged books.

According to Bryce Nieman, the Keller ISD spokeswoman, all 41 challenged books will be re-evaluated by campus employees and librarians to determine if they adhere to a new board policy passed last week.

According to Nieman, a new policy for purchasing and evaluating books was authorized by the school board, which included the three new members elected in the spring.

The policies are partially based on the model policy produced by the Texas Education Agency in April in response to calls from Governor Greg Abbott for a statewide standard for these practices. Materials may be accepted or rejected at the discretion of the school board or an individual so designated by the board.

Wednesday marks the first day of classes at Keller ISD.

Earlier in the school year, concerned parents discovered Kobabe’s book in the district and asked for it to be withdrawn. This led to the formation of the district book committee. Similarly, state representative for Fort Worth, Texas, Republican Matt Krause, has asked school districts for data on how many of 850 books on race and sexuality (including Kobabe’s) are currently available to students.

A flurry of book challenges across the state were sparked by Keller ISD and Krause, respectively, over books that presented the experiences of LGBTQ people and novels that dealt with the realities of racism.

Titles like “Out of Darkness” by Ashley Hope Pérez, which recounts the love story of a Mexican American girl and an African American boy in 1930s East Texas, including the 1937 New London School explosion some 200 miles north of Houston, are on both the Keller and Krause reading lists.

After heated school board elections in May, which focused on how and which texts students in Texas public schools should be able to access, a number of textbooks were removed from classroom libraries.

Patriot Mobile, a Texas-based mobile firm that gives a percentage of its customers’ phone bills to conservative, “Christian,” causes, spent heavily during those school board contests, overwhelmingly supporting more conservative candidates.

Over $500,000 was collected by the company’s PAC, Patriot Mobile Action, and donated to candidates for Keller and other Tarrant County school board seats.

Top political consulting firms were paid with some of the funds donated to help politicians “save America” by promoting a platform that rejects critical race theory.

Keller ISD parent and former book committee member Laney Hawes speculates that the three newly elected school board members’ campaigns were funded in part by the Patriot Mobile Action PAC, which has a history of funding conservative causes.

“I feel bad for students who, many of them, the only opportunity they’re going to have to learn about really, really difficult topics is in books,” Hawes said. “I feel bad for the most marginalized kids in our school district, the LGBTQ+ kids and also a lot of the kids of color. I’m sad. I’m disheartened and I’m frustrated and I’m angry.”

The head of free expression and education programs at PEN America, an organization that works to promote writers’ rights, said in a statement that the Keller ISD mandate “tramples” on the work that the committee members performed over the past year to their list.

“Students’ First Amendment rights have been horribly violated by the widespread effort to remove these books from classrooms and libraries on the eve of the new school year. Eliminating books from a school or library collection in response to complaints from any source would make administration nearly impossible “As Friedman put it.

Studies in critical race theory primarily take place at the university level, and their primary premise is that racism is structurally institutionalized, rather than confined to isolated people. Although it is not required coursework in Texas’ public schools, conservatives have adopted the term as a catchall for discussions of race and ethnicity in secondary education.

Some parents have referred to books about LGBTQ problems as “pornographic,” and all of the candidates for school board have promised to remove them and replace them with materials that don’t teach “critical racial theory.”

Patriot Mobile Action supported Micah Young, Joni Shaw Smith, and Sandi Walker for the Keller school board. Every single one of them was victorious. The Texas Tribune tried to reach both Young and Smith for comment on Tuesday, but neither one of them got back to us. In an interview with the Tribune, Walker stated flatly that she did not know any details.

Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick are just two of the state legislators who have spoken out against what they call “indoctrination” of students in public schools since last year. In their respective reelection campaigns this November, both senior elected leaders have made protecting parents’ rights a primary issue.

Similarly to the right drive to limit classroom conversations about LGBTQ persons being made in Florida, Patrick has committed to work for a “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Texas.

On January 26 during a campaign event at a charter school in Lewisville, Abbott made the following declaration: “Parents will be restored to their rightful place as the main decision-maker for their children.”

Parents in Texas, however, have enjoyed extensive protections for some time.

At the moment, parents in Texas have the legal right to temporarily withdraw their child from any class or activity that they feel goes against their religious convictions. They are legally entitled to evaluate all course materials and communicate with the school’s administration and student’s teachers.

In addition, boards of education need to put in place a process for hearing out parent concerns.

Sexuality education is voluntary in Texas’s public schools. In 2009, health education was no longer needed for high school diplomas.

Though, some parents have become increasingly vocal at school board meetings, believing their rights have been violated, as a result of their opposition to disguising rules and frustration with nearly three years of on-again, off-again school closures.

ISTHATPORKS TAKE:

If you ever wondered how the truth in history became stranger than fiction, look no further than this generation of "BLOCKHEADS" who share the same orbit around the sun as we do, but, who attempt to make the organicness and greatness of science and God's work fiction. These are the same people who changed the complexion of Jesus only to say when confronted "what difference does it matter God is in all of us". I hear you saying "if it didn't matter why did you change it then?" Yes!, that's what common sense would say, but these people are in the business of changing common sense. They would change the color of the SUN if they could. They have "Alternative facts" You heard that before right? Sounds familiar! They never answer a question or fill a void, they're void. They just keep undoing God's works. Some call them Devils. Well, is what they're doing good? You have to answer that question yourselves. One thing we know is, if the truth just became stranger for generations to come because they just deleted these 41 books, you tell us what that is? certainly isn't good. While you're at that, why don't you realize the same in the 42 negative confessions as they relate to the 10 commandments, wait, is it 10 commandments or really 42? or how the bible came to be and why those books were deleted? Life before Adam & Eve? they say NAH! but yet the oldest fossil found with human makeup was some 3.2 million years ago. They call her Lucy. Named after a Beatles song. But, she had an African name and didn't look the way they say. Do your research. So who are the people doing this, where do they come from, and what's their makeup? take a look at their face, give them a hard, long appraisal, and more importantly, if you see them ask them why can't they follow the rules of GOD. Why do they have to change GOD's work? What's their human malfunction? for your edification and to their dismay there was over 30 DYNASTYS in Africa before the COMMON ERA that gave you the story of Cleopatra, the Virgin Mary, Adam & Eve, and the World as you know it. By the time Homer came along with his greek philosophies Egypt was in its 23rd Dynasty and was something like 10,000 yrs deep. No one knew racism, no one knew original sin, and no one KNEW PORK UNTIL??? yeah, look at those faces that want to keep the truth out of schools. Look at the faces that want to keep the BIG LIE going. You should in fact see the past right now in the present. Any Questions?

DOZENS REQUIRE CPR AFTER CROWD SURGE IN SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA… At Itaewon Gathering

Dozens of unresponsive victims requiring CPR at what appeared to have been a large gathering in South Korea on Saturday have raised death toll estimates to several.

Pictures and videos of dozens of people lying on the streets of the trendy Seoul area of Itaewon are currently making the rounds online, with many of them receiving chest compressions from passersby and emergency personnel.

It's clear from the reaction that the scenario is extremely chaotic, and the visuals are unsettling because many of the people in them don't appear to be conscious.

Ground reports indicate that over a hundred people were hurt, with many reportedly suffering cardiac arrest. Photos show police placing tarps over what appear to be dead bodies, suggesting a high death toll, although the New York Times reports only 2 confirmed deaths.

There are so many people here because this is one of the largest Halloween parties in Seoul; word is that tens of thousands of people have crammed into the narrow alleys, which may have caused the stampede.

It has been speculated, but not proven, that the crush occurred when a celebrity was spotted in Itaewon and everyone rushed to the scene's only bar to catch a glimpse of them.

Yoon Suk Yeol, president of South Korea, has already sent emergency services to the city of Seoul, and the mayor is returning from an overseas trip to assess the damage and receive a briefing.

The story is currently evolving…

In Buffalo, New York, four adolescents were killed in a car incident early Monday.

Marcus Webster (19), Swazine Swindle (17), Kevin Payne (16), and Ahjanae Harper (14), according to the New York Post.

Kia, the destroyed vehicle, was reported stolen on Sunday night, according to Buffalo police. Police think the youngsters took the vehicle to take part in “The Kia Challenge,” a viral challenge on the video-sharing platform TikTok in which users are shown how to hot-wire a Kia, a South Korean automobile, using only a screwdriver and a USB connection.

According to WIVB, “five of the six occupants, were ejected.”

The unidentified 16-year-old driver of the stolen vehicle was reportedly one of two people who survived the crash and received treatment at Erie County Medical Center. According to the source, the driver has been arrested and charged with criminal possession of stolen property and illegal use of a vehicle.

While he awaits his court date today (Friday, October 28), police have freed him on bond.

A 14-year-old girl was the other lucky survivor; she was taken to the hospital and treated in intensive care before being released.

Having recently received a newborn girl on what would have been Harper’s 15th birthday, her family has started a GoFundMe to raise $15,000.

A resident of the area said of her in a TIKTOK video, “SHE WAS A YOUNG MOTHER,

Nashira Anderson, Swindle’s sister, said her sibling’s favorite activities included basketball and jokes.

Webster will be remembered by his family and friends as a dedicated worker who struggled to keep up with both employment and school.

Police arrested alledged serial killer in Stockton, Calif.

Never Pork

California, STOCKTON — Suspect in the shooting deaths of six men and the injury of a woman in Northern California was apprehended early Saturday morning as he drove around Stockton with a revolver, authorities said.

Five of the shootings took occurred in this city in the Central Valley, and police began following leads on the culprit around 2 a.m., according to Police Chief Stanley McFadden’s press conference.

Stockton resident Wesley Brownlee, 43, “was out hunting,” according to McFadden. Brownlee wore a mask and all black clothing.

He then stated, “We are sure we stopped another killing.”

For some time, it was unclear if Brownlee was represented by counsel. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to be formally charged with murder.

The black and gray weapon the guy was reportedly carrying was seen on police camera. A semiautomatic handgun made of what looked like plastic and rubber.

Between July 8 and September 27, five men were ambushed and shot dead in Stockton, and police had been seeking for a man in black who had been seen at multiple murder scenes. A car was parked, and four people were walking.

A man was killed in Oakland, 70 miles distant, in April 2021, and a week later, a homeless lady was injured in Stockton; police suspect the same individual was responsible for both attacks.

Ballistics testing and surveillance footage, according to investigators, proved the crimes were related.

A moment of silence was observed at the press conference in honor of the victims.

On April 10, 2021, Juan Vasquez Serrano, 39, was shot and murdered in Oakland; on April 16, 2021, Natasha LaTour, 46, was shot but survived in Stockton. Five men were slain in Stockton this year: 35-year-old Paul Yaw on July 8; 43-year-old Salvador Debudey Jr. on August 11; 21-year-old Jonathan Hernandez Rodriguez on August 30; 52-year-old Juan Cruz on September 21; and 54-year-old Lawrence Lopez Sr. on September 27.

Brownlee has a criminal background, according to the police, and he is thought to have lived in other places in the Stockton area.

Hundreds of leads poured in when authorities announced the manhunt, and investigators were able to track down and keep a close eye on Brownlee’s residence.

With the help of information from the public and Stockton Crime Stoppers, police were able to narrow in on a likely culprit, as McFadden explained. “Our agents kept tabs on him as he drove around. We observed his behavior and realized he was on a killing spree first thing this morning.”

McFadden further mentioned that Brownlee was held because he had been seen going to parks and other dimly lit areas, stopping to look around, and then continuing on.

They were looking into the attacks to see if they could determine a reason for them. The police reported that some of the victims were homeless but not all. No one was hurt, and the one woman who made it out alive claimed her attacker was silent.

The police chief acknowledged the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshals Service, and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration.

Investigators in the area have teamed up with their counterparts in Chicago to look into the possibility of a connection between these slayings and two homicides that occurred in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood in 2018. A man in black with a peculiar walk was spotted on surveillance footage, according to the authorities.
