Pete Rock celebrates ‘MECCA & THE SOUL BROTHER’s 30th anniversary with DJ Filthy Rich.

One of the most iconic beats in Hip Hop history can be found on “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y. ),” which was released in 1992 by Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth. The song was written by Rock and C.L. Smooth and features a sample of Tom Scott’s 1967 performance of Jefferson Airplane’s “Today” in honor of their buddy Troy Dixon, who tragically passed away in 1990 while performing as a backup dancer for Heavy D & the Boyz on tour.

From their self-titled first album, “T.R.O.Y.” is an absolute must-listen for any true Hip Hop head. To commemorate the album’s 30th anniversary since its debut, Pete Rock has released a special mixtape. DJ Filthy Rich reimagined the iconic project in a mix that lasts almost 60 minutes.

Filthy Rich said in the video’s description, “@realpeterock & @therealclsmooth classic LP ‘Mecca and the Soul Brother’ turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends. The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for ‘Lots Of Lovin’ still amazes me).

“Combine that with C.L.’s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MCs could rhyme like THIS back in ’92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90’s NYC boom-bap. RIP Heavy D & T-Roy.”

On the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums list, Mecca and The Soul Brother peaked at number seven, while on the Billboard 200, it reached number forty-three. Rock reflected on the success of “T.R.O.Y.” and shared the reasons why he never tires of listening to it.

“I made that song for my homeboy that passed away, so it just reminds me that I was successful in doing that song for my boy,” Rock said at the time. “Every time I hear someone give me props on ‘Reminisce,’ I think about him.”

After Dixon passed away, Rock went record hunting with Main Source MC/producer Large Professor, who played him Tom Scott’s “Today” from his 1967 album The Honeysuckle Breeze. A major component of the “T.R.O.Y.” sample was the horns from the original song.

“I didn’t discover the record first,” he said. “I think Professor knew about the record and when I found it with him, I was just like, ‘Wow.’ He already knew about it and Black Sheep had already used it. They used it on their first album, but they only used the guitar, at the beginning of the ‘Today’ record. They didn’t go deep into the record. They didn’t use the bassline and they didn’t use their horns. I went deep-sea diving into that muthafucka.”

Even though Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth are no longer a working combo, the iconic producer has kept on releasing music for the past three decades. Petestrumentals 3, his first sample-free official project since 2015’s Petestrumentals 2, was released in 2020. Some of Smoke DZA’s other works include Don’t Smoke Rock and The Return of the SP-1200.

Hip Hop Heads who know Hip Hop know that this was arguably the best album of 1992. The combination of supreme rap skills & production was perfectly intertwined in this outing. Song after song, lyric after lyric, melody after melody one had the thought that Pete Rock & C.L decided perfectly the song selection. You can virtually play this album from the first song to the last and not feel like you need to skip anything. Undoubtedly, it ranks as one of the best albums of all time and the best of these two. That's why they're legends. NO PORK IN THAT!

T.I. on SON KING HARRIS’ arrest: “will teach him life’s lessons”.

T.I. and Tiny’s son, King Harris, was detained on August 31. This prompted the 18-year-old to post a series of videos in which he responded to allegations that he was trying to pass himself off as a gangster.

The videos sparked an immediate outcry, with many people demanding that Tip do a better job of parenting his son so that he wouldn’t have to squander his future for internet fame.

As was previously reported, it was unclear what led to the arrest of the teen.

The Atlanta rap star eventually responded with an Instagram post, warning his critics that their admonitions were ignored.

“Got a small request,” T.I. said. “Stop hitting me and getting in my comments, telling me what to tell King, okay? I know my son. Think I ain’t spoke to my son? Think I ain’t told my son, his mama, and his grandmama?” he began. 

“His a– going to prison if he godd— keeps up. His a– going to prison. Ain’t no way around it. Ain’t nothing I’m going to be able to do it about it. Can’t nobody stop it but him. I’ve already had the conversation, I’ve already made my peace with it. ‘Cause I know that energy — I was that energy. I know exactly how it’s gonna turn out.”

Next, he said, “King’s a good kid. He’s chasing after the wrong s— and I trust in God to deal with it the way he see fit… Now, he going have to go through it and get through it… Life is gonna teach him all the lessons he need to know.” King had previously addressed the arrest in a video, saying that he had not sought out police intervention. The young man, then 18, began attacking those who had called him out, and he questioned why the blogs that had reported on his arrest had ignored his most recent music release as Kid Saiyan. Another viral video included a young woman proudly displaying her seatbelt violations while King can be heard stating, “got four.”

Jay-Z talks Meek Mill leaving Roc Nation in “God Did”

Meek Mill’s exit from Roc Nation has been addressed for the first time by Jay-Z. Hov appeared on DJ Khaled’s GOD DID and contributed a verse to the song of the same name. Jay-Z has more than four minutes to say his views on the eight-minute track, which also features Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and John Legend. He starts off by mentioning that he thinks LeBron James should join the ranks of Hip-few Hop’s millionaires.

“Hov did, please, Lord forgive me for what the stove did/ Nobody touched the billi’ until Hov did,” Jay-Z confidently rhymes. “How many billionaires can come from Hov crib? Huh/I count three, me, Ye and Rih/Bron’s a Roc boy, so four, technically.”

“Me and Meek could never beef. I freed that ni**a from a whole bid, Hov did,” the rapper boasts during his 4-minute verse.

Timed to coincide with Meek Mill’s exit from Roc Nation after a decade together is this new verse. Taking to social media on July 11 to set the record straight, Meek stated that his exit was amicable.

“All I seen today was meek and roc part ways. I’m personally handling my own business, so I can take risk and grow,” Mill clarified in his first of a series of tweets. “We came to that agreement together. I have a label deal with Roc for my artist, and I got reform super tied with them and many other investments wit Jigga.”
